Insurance Information
for Midwifery Clients
Homebirth with Stephanie + Insurance:
Fees for midwifery care are structured as package prices that include many different scenarios and are deeply discounted because they do not require the use of a medical biller.
If you utilize your health insurance, we must bill the insurance for services rendered (instead of our package price). This means that sometimes what is billed to the insurance will more than the flat fee, and sometimes it will be less.
The flat fee does not correlate with the amount billed to the insurance. Instead, the flat fee counts as a retainer towards your responsibility (deductible, coinsurance, etc.). If your responsibility is less than the flat fee, you will be reimbursed the difference minus the insurance billing fee of 10%.

1) Verify your insurance benefits by calling your member services or looking at your online account.
If you have a sense that your insurance should cover some of your care and your deductible is under $6000 it's likely worth it to seek out a Verification of Benefits, or VOB.
2) Take the next steps to get your home birth covered.
Do you already know that your plan covers some or all of your out-of-hospital birth and want to start the process with insurance?
Look into purchasing an insurance verification package from a medical billing pro that specializes in birth.
Bear + Wolf Medical Billing is currently on hiatus; however, you may also request VOB services from Birth Professional Billing.
